An IT systems outage has left hundreds of people stranded at Gold Coast Airport on Monday morning.
The outage has affected check-ins and bag collection, and airline staff have had to revert to checking passengers in manually, resulting in wait times of at least three hours.
Those waiting have been told, via announcements on the loudspeakers, that it is unknown just how long they will have to wait.
Elloise Farrow-Smith, a reporter for the ABC, said, “It’s like Hotel California here really. You can check in but you can’t check out,” Farrow-Smith said.
“Planes have been coming in but I have noticed that they cancelled a lot of flights.”
Christopher Devine, a passenger trying to get to Manchester, UK, told the ABC, “It’s horrendous… I can’t fault the airport staff, they have been great. But this is supposed to be an up-to-date airport.”
“I don’t understand how they haven’t got a back-up system.”
Carly Twyman, a spokesperson for Gold Coast Airport said, “Gold Coast Airport is currently experiencing an IT outage which is causing delays during check-in.”
“We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible… We apologise for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates.”
