Police have arrested a 12-year-old girl following a fatal stabbing in Melbourne on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to the former Royal Hotel on Barkly Street in Footscray shortly before 2am.
It has been reported that a 37-year-old woman was found dead with stab wounds and police arrested a 12-year-old girl at the scene.
“Officers quickly attended and arrested the girl at the scene,” a spokesperson for the Victoria Police said.
“She was taken to hospital for assessment where she remains under police guard.”
It is unclear whether the pair were known to each other.
A crime scene has been established and detectives were seen collecting evidence.
The Barkly Street address is believed to be a hostel with apartments above.
An altercation had allegedly arisen on one of the upper floors.
Investigations are ongoing.
Police have appealed to car owners in the area to check their dashcam footage and come forward with it.

Recently, there were reports that the number of violent and serious crimes committed by Victorian youth had significantly increased.
This upward trend was being driven by offenders aged 14 to 17.
According to state crime statistics, young people aged 10 to 13 account for a small minority (1%) of all alleged offender incidents.
