EARLY work on stage two of the Parramatta Light Rail is to begin later this year after John Holland won a $322m contract to build the first section of the project.
The developer has the task of building the first 1.3km of a new light rail alignment, including a 320m bridge over Parramatta River.
The bridge, to be located between Melrose Park and Wentworth Point, will carry buses, light rail, cyclists and pedestrians.
NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen describes the contract as a “significant step” in extending the Parramatta Light Rail.
“The new bridge will ensure the growing communities of Melrose Park and Wentworth Point are well-connected,” she says.
“It will enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and boost economic growth.”
NSW MP for Parramatta Donna Davis says “it’s exciting” to see the State Government deliver on a project that has been two years in the pipeline.
“Investigation works will begin this summer, with shovels in the ground next year. I cannot wait to see this new bridge spring to life.”
Design and early works are due to begin this year before major bridge construction starts in 2025.
It will be the first major bridge crossing the Parramatta River since the Ryde Bridge was completed nearly 40 years ago. This work will also see upgrades to surrounding public spaces including Archer Park.
The NSW Government says the new bridge will form part of 9.5km of walking and bike-riding paths. Construction is expected to create 1000 jobs, with 80% of those based in Western Sydney.
John Holland Pty Ltd was chosen from a field of 19 bidders, nationally and internationally, the government says.
Works will be confined to weekdays where possible and Saturday work limited to critical bridge construction activities.
Stage 2 will connect to Stage 1 (and the Parramatta CBD) to Sydney Olympic Park via Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park, and Wentworth Point with 14 stops over 10 kilometres.
Stage 1 is in the final stages of testing and commissioning, with passenger services expected to start before the end of the year.
