Greyhound racers are to be compensated as the Tasmanian Government moves to phase out the industry.

The government says compensation will be included in new legislation and budget.

“As we progress the phase-out of greyhound racing in Tasmania by June 2029, we will ensure participant and animal welfare are the priority,” Premier Jeremy Rockliff says.

“Details about the compensation framework will be included in the legislation and a funding package will be outlined in this year’s Budget, supporting a careful and measured exit from greyhound racing in Tasmania.”

The Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner is planning the phaseout; Racing Minister Jane Howlett is promising a measured and sensible plan.

“Consultation during this process has already been extensive.

“The commissioner will undertake further consultation during the development of the phaseout plan, which forms part of the Bill,” she says.

“This phaseout plan, which is subject to public inspection during the transition period, will be tabled in parliament.

“It will serve as a strategic and operational guidance document in the management of the phase out of greyhound racing.”

The Tasmanian Government says it wants to ensure good animal welfare rehoming and a clear pathway for those who will be affected by the phaseout.

The industry is returning to the track following a recent outbreak of kennel cough.

Tasracing has already said it cannot afford to compensate for the financial impact of the temporary shutdown caused by the outbreak: click here for the statement.

Meanwhile, Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) says it will not go ahead with plans to buy land for a new track at Tamworth.

The decision follows the pull-out by partner Harnes Racing NSW from moves to buy the site at Burgmann’s Lane on the city outskirts.

GRNSW says it will continue to look for a site.

GRNSW is facing the loss of its Sydney track at Wentworth Park when the lease expires next year, with the site to be developed for housing.

Opponents of greyhound racing in NSW say the industry is facing a perfect storm of housing, living costs and social factors; click here to read what they said.
