Pandemic program makes way for the NIP
A free COVID-19 vaccine is now available through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for adults aged 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 and over, and adults aged 18 and over with severe immunocompromise, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has confirmed. COVID-19 vaccines are now funded through the NIP, replacing the National COVID-19 Vaccination Program that was introduced during the pandemic. The department published the update on 1 October 2026 and says vaccination continues to be an important way to reduce the risk of serious illness from COVID-19.
Who gets a free COVID-19 vaccine
According to the department, the vaccine is free under the NIP for:
- Adults aged 75 and over: 2 free doses a year, given around 6 months apart.
- Adults aged 65 to 74: one free dose a year.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 to 74: one free dose a year.
- Adults aged 18 to 64 with severe immunocompromise: one free dose a year.
You must also have a Medicare card or be eligible for one.
If you do not qualify
People outside these groups are not covered by the NIP, so a free COVID-19 vaccine through the program is not available to them. The department says they should talk to a health professional about whether vaccination is recommended for them. Most vaccines are available for private purchase with a prescription, and the cost is not covered or reimbursed through the NIP. Some vaccines the NIP does not fund may be funded by a state or territory, so it is worth checking your local immunisation schedule.
Check the fees before you book
Even a free COVID-19 vaccine can come with a cost. The department says some providers charge a consultation fee to give vaccines, including free ones, so check with the provider before you make an appointment.
