Firefighter Izabella Nash has died after being seriously injured in a factory fire in Slacks Creek, South of Brisbane.
Ms Nash received CPR at the scene of the fire near the Pacific Highway in Slacks Creek, and was then rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition yesterday morning.
Ms Nash was pronounced dead at 9pm on Tuesday.
Lia Drew, another firefighter, was also taken to hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition. How the firefighters were injured, and what exactly caused the fire, are currently under investigation.
Ms Nash is the first Queensland firefighter to have died while on the job since 2017.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement that Ms Nash was an experienced firefighter who had been in the service since 2014.
“The thoughts of all QFES members are with Izzy’s and Lia’s families, friends and fellow crew members,” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said, “She was clearly devoted to her job, on the frontline supporting her fellow Queenslanders.”
“Izabella’s passing is a terribly sad and poignant reminder of the dangers our frontline staff face on a daily basis.”
Fire and Emergency Services minister Mark Ryan said on Twitter that he is, “so sad to hear of the passing of firefighter Izabella Nash.”
“With Izzy’s passing, Queensland has lost a hero.
“The thoughts of our entire state are with her family, friends and the broader fire and emergency services family.”
