Hot, dry, and windy conditions in northern New South Wales have led to an increased bushfire threat and a total fire ban across eight regions.
There are a total of 70 fires across NSW, with extreme fire risks in regions including Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Far North Coast, North Western, Northern Slopes, and New England.
Areas across Bean Creek, near Kyogle, Ellangowan, Moparrabah, near Casino, west of Kempsey, and Cherry Tree Hill, have all experienced fires, and have been moved to an ‘elevated Watch and Act warning.’
Another grassfire in Kyogle had gone to ‘Watch and Act’ earlier but has now been downgraded to ‘Advice.’
Daniel Ainsworth, Rural Fire Service district manager for the region, said the fire was burning over an area of over 64 hectares at Upper Horseshoe Creek.
Ainsworth has warned that conditions in the area are worsening.
“The conditions that are forecast this afternoon it’s going to be quite dangerous,” Ainsworth said.
The village of Ashford near Inverell held a community meeting last night while a grassfire in Wallangara continues to burn.
The Wallangara and Limestone roads have closed due to the dangerous fire conditions, with residents warned to remain careful and watchful of conditions.
Far North Coast authorities are also in the process of controlling a fire in coastal heath near Byron Bay.
