The Australian Government is rolling out a new anti-vaping and anti-smoking campaign to support Australians to quit nicotine addictions.
The “Give Up for Good” campaign involves four separate streams of anti-vaping and anti-smoking advertising that will target four key demographics.
The adverts will be viewable through television, cinema, digital video and audio, social media, radio and out-of-home channels throughout 2024.
These complementary advertising approaches are ‘Why Are We Still Doing This?’ for young people who vape, ‘Vaping. Are You Really Choosing Anymore?’ for adults who vape, ‘Choose Your Hard’ for adults who smoke, and ‘Keep At Quitting’ for First Nations adults who smoke.
The advertising will raise awareness of health problems that arise from smoking and vaping, while encouraging Australians to take advantage of quit support services.
The anti-vaping influencer content has been viewed close to 7.7 million times and has generated over 618,000 likes and more than 900 comments.
Some of the support services to aid Australians in quitting involve:
- Funding to expand and ensure nationally equitable access to Quitline services
- Development of an online cessation hub at quit.org.au
- Redevelopment of the My QuitBuddy app to provide new features and support
- Dedicated resources to support parents and carers
- Updated clinical guidance for health practitioners
Approximately 3.3 million Australians reported engaging in vaping and/or smoking in 2022. The Australian Government has been acting to combat widespread vaping, introducing anti-vaping legislation earlier in the year.
Rachel Andersen, Quit Director, has approved of the push for further anti-vaping and smoking content, stating that the organisation is “here to help all Australians quitting smoking or vaping”.
“We want to remind people they’re not alone in giving up for good. Quit services are culturally safe, they’re inclusive, non-judgmental and free. So whether it’s your first attempt to quit, or your tenth, we’re here to support you.”
The “Give Up for Good” campaign has cost $63.4 million. While the current advertising will end in December, the overall campaign is part of a multi-year investment to reduce smoking and vaping.
