A rare 1973 MV Agusta 750S classic motorcycle that sold for $151,000 has set an Australian record in the process.
The Augusta was part of a collection of vintage and classic motorcycles auctioned off by Donington Auctions on Sunday, September 22.
The fully restored 1973 MV Agusta 750 S was subject to some spirited bidding and its sale price set a new Australian auction record for the make.
According to the auction company, only 556 examples of this model were produced between 1970-1975 (or less than three a week).
This bike was first sold in Germany in October 1973 and received a ground-up restoration during 2012 in the UK, according to the company.
Donington also said the entire collection sold for just under $800,000 with a 97% lot clearance rate.
“People are looking for unique investment opportunities outside of more traditional avenues like real estate or shares, and particularly investments they can enjoy,” says company director Cameron Sabine.
“We see items of quality and rarity bucking the trends and still performing well in the current market.”
A 1976 Ducati 900SS was at the centre of a three-way a bidding war; the bike was sold for $70,000. In 2018 it was sold and bought to Australia and was since restored to European specifications.
A 1972 Triumph X75 Hurricane 750 sold for $40,000, whose design was influenced by the movie Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda.
The auction company says this bike likely began production life in the US, taken to Holland, brought to Hong Kong then shipped to Australia about 15 years ago.
Other highlights of the auction include a Piaggo 1961 Vespa VBB 150 with sidecar which sold for $27,250.
A restored 1974 Kawasaki H2 Mach IV 750 set a new auction benchmark with a sale price of $35,500.
