Digging up dirt heralds start of work on $19.5m Suttons Beach Pavilion

The dirt was literally dug up on a new $19.5 million beach pavilion at Redcliffe in Brisbane today.Moreton Bay City Council held a sod-turning ceremony on site for the new Suttons Beach Pavilion attended by local and federal MPs.City Mayor Peter Flannery says it is exciting to see work start on the project.“It’s fantastic that construction has begun on this project that will return the site to an iconic destination the community can enjoy for generations to come,” he said.He predicts that the site will be popular with locals and visitors alike.“We’re looking forward to this seaside precinct opening in mid-2027 and the flow-on benefits it will deliver for employment, economic development and tourism in Moreton Bay.”Flannery also says future developments are in store for the region as Brisbane continues to build for the 2032 Summer Olympic Games.“The city of Moreton Bay is getting well-known now throughout Australia and also internationally,” he told a press conference.“There is great interest in future developments here.”CLICK HERE FOR OUR VIDEO

DIRT TURNING ‘MARKS A MOMENT’

Federal MP for Petrie Emma Comer says the dirt turning ceremony is a significant moment.“We’re seeing real progress on a project that will transform Suttons Beach into a vibrant accessible and welcoming waterfront destination,” she says.“The new pavilion and upgraded amenities will ensure Suttons Beach remains an iconic gathering place for generations while boosting local businesses and economic activity across the (Redcliffe) peninsula.”MP for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley says the project is significant to the community.“Suttons Beach Pavilion has been an iconic site for Redcliffe locals and visitors for many decades,” she said.“This is an important milestone - seeing the Pavilion come back to life to create a modern venue for all to enjoy.”Councillor Karl Winchester was also excited by the project.“Having advocated … for the building of a new Suttons Beach Pavilion every step of the way, it’s great to see construction kick-off,” he says.“The pavilion will be a landmark site."I can’t wait to see people grab a coffee or enjoy a meal on our beautiful beachfront.”

ABOUT THE PAVILION

The dirt-turning ceremony marks the start of construction on a new pavilion, extensive landscaping and public amenities like accessible toilets and showers and change rooms.The building will feature shade features, a rooftop space and public viewing deck with views out over the bay to Moreton Island.The pavilion will also offer indoor and outdoor food and drink catering, upstairs and downstairs while remnants of the former pavilion will be reused; the 1998 rotunda is to be relocated to provide more shade while historic bricks will be used in landscaping.The project is being funded three-ways under the South-East Queensland City Deal; the federal and state governments are giving $12.1m with $7.4m coming from council.The new pavilion is due to open in mid-2027.
