The Ekka Show in Brisbane will stay put at the RNA Showgrounds up to and beyond the 2032 Olympic Games, the Queensland Government says.
But it is funding a $287.5 million transformation of the showgrounds and precinct that involves an upgrade of the 20,000-seat main arena with new grandstand and horse pavilion.
Hutchinson Builders will carry out the work, the government says, which is due to start in September with the demolition of the grandstand on Machinery Hill.
The Ekka will remain the showgrounds during construction except for 2032 when the Summer Olympics are on; the Brisbane Athletes Village for the games will overlook the showgrounds and then will be turned into housing.
EKKA’S FUTURE ‘SAFE’
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie claims the show’s future is secure.
“This is about securing the future of an iconic Queensland institution while creating a world-class precinct for events, entertainment and inner-city living,” he says.
“The Ekka’s future is not only secured, it’ll be bigger and better than ever and also able to continue while construction is under way.”
Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) CEO Brendan Christou says the news reinforces the show’s long-term future at the site.
“As Queenslanders celebrate 150 years of Ekka this year, this announcement ensures that our iconic show remains here, at its birthplace, for another 150 years,” he claims.
“The upgraded Main Arena will strengthen the showgrounds as a destination for major events, entertainment and community life, allow us to welcome the world during the Games and ensure the Ekka remains at the heart of the site for generations to come.”
