Demolition of the greyhound racing track at Wentworth Park in inner Sydney is expected to start before Christmas.

The last race was held on Friday (October 16) as the 3.3-hectare sports complex is slated to be developed as part of a 14-hectare parkland for 2500 new homes to be built.

Detailed planning and approval for the demolition of the grandstand is now under way, the NSW Government says, with management of the site to be turned over to Sydney City Council.

The transformation follows an agreement between the state government and the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) to accelerate racing’s move to other venues from November 2026.

Planning and Public Spaces Minister Paul Scully says the final race at ‘Wenty’ is an “important” step in developing the Ultimo-Pyrmont precinct in one of Sydney’s fastest-growing inner-city areas.

DEMOLITION PART OF WIDER WORK

“The redevelopment of Wentworth Park will help make sure the public spaces and recreation facilities needed to support growth are available for local residents, workers and visitors for decades to come.”

Lands and Sport Minister Steve Kamper says the demolition will help “unlock” the site for future public use.

Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris says: “Wentworth Park has been synonymous with greyhound racing in NSW for generations and the final race meeting (the Million Dollar Chase) was an opportunity to celebrate its remarkable contribution to the sport and the many people who helped make it an iconic venue.

“While racing concludes at this site, greyhound racing has a strong future across metropolitan and regional NSW, especially following this week’s announcement the Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct will be relocated to the Richmond Club.”

Labor’s candidate for Balmain, Philippa Scott says that “we need more homes in NSW and we need to deliver the community infrastructure to go with it”.

“Converting Wentworth Park to sporting fields and open space for the community is an important part of delivering on our plan.”
