Queensland bail and youth justice bill receives final parliamentary reading

The Queensland Parliament passed the government’s overhaul of the state’s bail and youth justice laws on 29 October 2026, when the Breach Bail, Go to Jail and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026 received its third and final reading.

The bill was first introduced on 27 August 2026. It amends four existing Acts: the Bail Act 1980, the Youth Justice Act 1992, the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 and the Young Offenders (Interstate Transfer) Act 1987. Most of its provisions are due to come into force on 30 November 2026.

Who is affected

The changes mainly target adults and young people who commit serious offences while on bail, and those applying for bail on serious charges. Because the bill amends both the Bail Act and the Youth Justice Act, it reaches into both the adult and youth bail systems. It also changes how police deal with young offenders before charging them.
