The Australian Border Force (ABF) is looking for Hunter locals to join them on a casual basis as Newcastle Airport gears up to host its first international service.
On October 21, Jetstar will start operating three direct flights from Newcastle to Bali.
The ABF’s Newcastle office will be tasked with customs and immigration clearances for all passengers passing through the airport’s new international terminal.
To assist with the expected influx in passengers, the ABF is looking to build up a local casual workforce to help support its frontline roles.
Recently advertised casual ABF Officer (ABFO) roles state the duties as administrative and operational support duties including processing passengers at Newcastle Airport and handling other support tasks.
The ad lists the salary range for the role as from $59,520 to $66,115 and a closing date of May 31, 2026.
Full-time training for three weeks is required, and applicants need to pass training to get the job, the ABF says.
Acting Assistant Commissioner East Rose Cracknell says they are keen on recruiting Hunter residents.
“This is our opportunity to showcase the Hunter region and our capability to an entirely new cohort of travellers and visitors,” she says.
“This is an important support role for our officers as we are often the first impression for international tourists arriving in Australia.
“We pride ourselves in making that a positive experience.”
Acting Assistant Commissioner Cracknell said that the new international flights means more officers are required on a casual, flexible basis.
“As well as working at the airport processing passengers, you will also have the opportunity to support a wide range of functions.”
The airport’s international terminal will have upgraded baggage handling, better road access, a new cafe and new car rental building.
