At least 65 women living in Melbourne have come forward after having received used condoms and graphic messages in the mail, said Victoria Police today.
The first incident was reported on March 20, with the most recent known occurrence this past Monday.
“It is believed that most of those who reported the material have received multiple letters, all with the suspected used item included,’ said the statement from Victoria Police.
“Officers believe the victims are linked and are part of a targeted attack.”
The reported victims graduated from Melbourne’s Kilbreda College in 1999, an all-girls Catholic school in Mentone.
Police did not reveal the contents of the letters, but one of the victims, Bree Walker, spoke to reporters from the Herald Sun about her experience, describing it as “disturbing” and “creepy.”
“I didn’t sleep the night I received the letter, it really creeped me out,” said Ms Walker.
“I found out that my friend also received a letter. I then messaged everyone from my year level and asked them if they received a letter and I found out that seven of them did.”
There is suspicion that the women’s names and addresses were obtained from a school yearbook.
Acting Senior Sergeant Grant Lewis of the Bayside Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team Detective said that about 100 letters in total had been sent to the 65 victims.
The contents of the letters are undergoing forensic analysis, and officers are talking to Australia Post for more information.
Ms Walker said that she had no idea who was behind the messages but that the writing was similar in all of them.
“We want this person to stop, it’s disgusting and it’s creepy. We don’t know what they’re gaining from it. It’s causing a lot of women to feel stressed,” she said.
Investigations are ongoing.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
