NSW rugby league fans can watch the 2024 NRL Grand Final in pubs for longer this Sunday night after the state government chose to extend licence hours.
Defending champions Penrith will take on Melbourne on Sunday at Sydney Olympic Park in the men’s grand final. The Sydney Roosters take on Cronulla in the women’s grand final
Licensed premises who are showing the game live will be able to trade until midnight, according to the government.
But the extra hours apply only to drinks sold on premises, and not takeaway alcohol sales or gaming machines.
Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris says the government wants to help fans “make the most” of it on Sunday.
“In 2023, we expanded the special event extended trading incentive to apply to small bars, general bars and live music and performance venues, as well as pubs and clubs, so people could head out and celebrate events like the NRL Grand Final,” he says.
“We want people to be able to enjoy the post-game celebrations but also stay safe.”
He also had a reminder for pub and premise owners: “Eligible venues must ensure they continue to adhere to Responsible Service of Alcohol requirements and have appropriate measures in place to ensure the safety of their patrons.”
Special event extended trading hours are made available under the Liquor Act 2007 for events deemed of regional, state or national significance.
Any individual trading restrictions or special conditions that apply to a venue’s liquor licence also remain in place.
Patrons should check with their local venue for specific opening hours on Sunday, the government says.
DALLY M MEDAL
Melbourne halfback Jahrome Hughes was crowned the 2024 Dally M Medallist just days out from the grand final.
Hughes won the Dally M Medal by a point over Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco in the annual awards ceremony held at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.
Rooster Olivia Kernick was crowned the Dally M Female Player of the Year.
Kernick earned 22 points to shade Parramatta’s Abbi Church (20 points) and Gold Coast’s Lauren Brown (20 points).
“Season 2024 has been a year worthy of celebration,” NRL CEO Andrew Abdo says.
“The year was full of exceptional performances and captivating storylines. Credit for this amazing success goes to the players, the coaches, the officials and most importantly the fans.”
