THE NSW Government has unveiled plans to rezone a 42-hectare site in North Parramatta for 2500 new houses and a university campus.
The government says a new campus could attract up to 25,000 students as part of the Westmead Health and Innovation District (WHID) precinct.
Government says the rezoning proposal will see half of the precinct dedicated as open green space and it will create up to 12,000 jobs through the WHID.
NSW Lands and Property Minister Steve Kamper says “Parramatta is going from strength-to-strength”.
“Delivering a vibrant Parramatta North is the next piece in the Parramatta puzzle,” he says.
“The rezoning of Parramatta North is crucial to unlocking the full potential of this precinct delivering jobs, housing, and open space, whilst taking full advantage of the new Parramatta Light Rail.
“Delivering a vibrant mixed-use precinct will mean the local community will be able to live, work and play on the doorstep of one of Sydney’s fastest-growing central business districts.”
MP for Parramatta Donna Davis says that “as Parramatta grows, we need to make sure the things that make Parramatta special are maintained”.
“Importantly, this proposal will protect the cultural precinct and earmark 30 significant heritage buildings for conservation while delivering 21 hectares of open space,” she says.
“We achieved these outcomes through meaningful consultation with the local community. I encourage members to continue to have their say to shape the future of Parramatta North.”
Under the proposal, planning controls for State Significant Development applications will be streamlined.
The government says the rich history, cultural significance and local heritage of the area has been considered in the rezoning application with over 30 historic buildings earmarked for conservation.
The cultural precinct, which includes the Parramatta Female Factory, is not included in the rezoning application.
A public exhibition of the proposal will end on February 10.
