Cumberland City Council is shining a light on the work of their seniors and disability services team in the lead up to national Aged Care Employee Day on August 7.
It is also promoting its Seniors Club Cumberland project, which runs free programs to counter social isolation.
Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed is proud of the work of by the seniors and disability services team.
“Our team plays an essential role in fostering a sense of belonging and support within our community,” she says.
“The success of the Seniors Club Cumberland project is a testament to their dedication to improving the lives of our seniors.”
Cr Hamed says the programs have had a “powerful impact” on social isolation, building connections and empowering older residents to live.
“This Aged Care Employee Day, we celebrate their tireless efforts and the incredible difference they make every day,” she says.
The team runs services to assist seniors and people with disabilities live a more independent life, council says.
These initiatives include:
- Seniors Festival events like bus trips, a golf day and a picnic in the park.
- Free seniors self-defence workshops.
- NAIDOC Week activities such as damper making, basket weaving, and a Tribal Warrior Cruise to celebrate Indigenous culture and history.
- Four bus trips, including visits to the Fairfield Museum.
- A Carers Week event featuring Arabian drumming and a dinner.
- Year-round home-delivered meals, over-55s exercise programs, Wellness programs, social outings and shopping services.
GOVT GRANT FUNDING
In January, Cumberland council was one of eight NSW councils to receive a $30,000 grant from the state government to set up a Seniors Club project.
Since its launch in March, Seniors Club Cumberland has attracted 100 participants in four groups across the council area.
Each group meets once a month to meet and strengthen friendships.
The club will hold a final celebration in December 2025 to unite all participants.
