A new $19 million retail beach pavilion will start to take shape at Redcliffe next year after Moreton Bay council decided on a builder.

The pavilion will be built amid a spike in high-rise development buildings being built along the Redcliffe shoreline.

A council spokesperson says the identity of the successful tenderer is confidential but a report to council says that from 13 initial applicants, they shortlisted six tender applicants.

The council report expects the new pavilion will create 50 ongoing jobs.

The new pavilion building is expected to feature 30-solar power panels, gardens and skylights on the roof building and viewing platform surrounded by extensive landscaping, public change rooms, new shade structures and an upgraded car park.

There will be food and beverage outlets at the site in the second half of 2027 but is subject to a separate tender process, council says.

Suttons Beach Pavilion Preservation Group President Jodie Starr says news that construction is due to start is exciting.

“This is a major milestone towards the community enjoying a new pavilion in such a stunning location,” she says.

“We have been without facilities at this iconic location for a long time and look forward to the construction of a worthy replacement.”

Mayor Peter Flannery says the work is only the start for Suttons Beach Park.

“We can’t wait to see work start at the site, bringing us a step closer to the fantastic waterfront facilities envisaged for Suttons Beach,” he says.

“We’re particularly pleased to add one of our accessible Changing Places facilities so everyone can enjoy our beaches.”

BOOST FOR REDCLIFFE

Federal MP for Petrie Emma Comer believes the project will prove to be a tourism and economic boon on Redcliffe Peninsula.

“We all have so many great memories of this beautiful foreshore area; soon, families will be able to make their own new memories with the new Pavilion,” she claims.

State MP for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley says the project is a significant milestone.

“As a born and bred local, I’ve visited Suttons Beach for over five decades,” she says.

“It’s been a place of wonderful history, connection and beauty and we want it to continue to be that for generations to come.”

Councillor Karl Winchester says he is also excited for work to get going.

“This one has taken some planning so it’s great news for the community that it’s now come to fruition and work is about to start.”

The project is funded by council and the state and federal governments under the Liveability Fund (itself part of a $1.8 billion SEQ City Deal).

The fund will give $11.33 million for the project.
