Outdoor fun at Burpengary, just north of Brisbane, have been given a boost with new bike trails and a $1 peppercorn lease for a cricket club.

For mountain bike riders, a new 3km-long Moreton Bay council-owned Lagoon Road trail is now open.

The network features three $700,000 purpose-built trails set among bushland near Grogan Road Park.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery says a growing population is fuelling demand for outdoor recreation facilities.

“The Lagoon Road mountain bike trails help meet that demand with a trail system designed and constructed by industry experts, featuring different levels of difficulty,” he says.

The trails feature wooden berms, boardwalks, rollers, dirt jumps and tabletops; there is a rock garden, a timber kicker ramp, timber snake ladder and more.

Councillor Mark Booth says “there has been a lot of anticipation (among local riders) for the opening”.

“I’ve got no doubt the trails have the potential to become one of the premier destinations for mountain bikers in South-East Queensland.”

BURPENGARY TRAILS USE

Residents are encouraged to access the trail by bikes as parking is limited.

Only pedal bikes and pedal e-bikes are permitted on the trails.

Non-pedal vehicles, such as motorbikes and e-motorbikes, are not permitted.

The opening of the trails follows the launch of a $530,000 pump track at Deception Bay in June and significant upgrades to four skate parks in Albany Creek, Deception Bay, Morayfield and North Lakes.

IT’S PLAY ON FOR LAKES CRICKET CLUB

Meanwhile, council has given a five-year peppercorn lease at the Burpengary Sports Complex for The Lakes Cricket Club.

The lease includes exclusive use of a storage shed and shared use of the clubhouse and sports fields.

The decision follows a recent merger of The Lakes Cricket Club and Burpengary Cricket Association. Club president Daniel Moyle says the new annual $1 lease will provide long-term security and keep the club going.

“Having exclusive use of the shed and shared access to the clubhouse and fields gives our members the certainty they need to plan for the future,” he says.

Flannery says the peppercorn lease will ease pressure on club officials so they can focus on the game.

“With over 550 patrons, it’s important for the club to have a safe enjoyable environment … this lease really helps the club hit it out of the park.”

Cr Booth says the new lease for The Lakes club will allow players to develop through access to quality facilities.
