NUDIFICATION CONCERNS WITH GROK
eSafety has also reached out to X/Twitter over its Grok AI system’s feature that allows users to create sexual deepfakes of women and children.
It says it has received “a small number of reports” that have grown in several weeks.
eSafety will use its powers, including removal notices, where appropriate, it says.
Grok is being banned or is facing investigation from countries over the issue even as the platform says it is taking steps to stop it.
eSafety says it has already had to crack down on ‘nudify’ services that create AI child sexual material and which forced them to withdraw from Australia.
eSAFETY SHIFTING FOCUS TO ENFORCEMENT
The office of eSafety says that has resulted in a shift of focus from preparation to monitoring and enforcement, concentrating on platforms assessed as age restricted with high under-16 usage.
Grant says her office will be evaluating the longer-term impact of this change along with youth mental health experts and the Academic Advisory Group.
Some platforms like BlueSky and Lemon are working with eSafety to ensure compliance, she adds.
“Given the vast number of online services and fast-evolving nature of the tech industry, it’s impossible to list all the services which meet the conditions and are obliged to comply with the social media minimum age obligation,” Grant says.
“As I have said, our focus will remain on platforms
with the highest number of Australian users.”
eSafety will gather data, reports and information, including any signs of large-scale user migration to other platforms, to ensure compliance.
So far, eSafety says, its analysis found that migration to other platforms had quickly spiked in terms of downloads but did not necessarily translate into usage.
It says that to protect its investigations and legal privilege, and preserve its ability to act, it will not publish specific numbers or detailed information obtained by it.
