Laquarna Chapman Palmer, aged six, was taken to hospital in a serious condition after being attacked by a dog in Woodridge, South of Brisbane, on Monday afternoon.

Paramedics were called at around 4:30 pm after reports that two people had been attacked.

Laquarna was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital with chest and abdominal injuries. A man, who raced to rescue Laquarna, was also attacked and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with leg injuries.

Logan City Council confirmed in a statement on Monday that two unregistered dogs had been seized from a Woodridge house.

“The dogs – which were not registered – were taken to Council’s Animal Management Centre,” the statement read. “Council is now working with the police investigation.”

“Logan City Council is committed to public safety through zero-tolerance of irresponsible animal ownership and high-risk animal behaviour.”

Queensland Police Acting Deputy Commissioner, Mark Wheeler, said, “there will be obviously a review of what’s occurred. A dog, particularly a large dog, and a young child, we know that can be a really catastrophic outcome.”

“Our thoughts are with the young girl her family and her friends, and we wish her a speedy recovery.”

Laquarna’s family told channel 7 that she is still currently in hospital, as of Tuesday morning, but is doing “all right.”
