A technical outage has stopped Commonwealth Bank customers from being able to make purchases with their bank cards or access their online accounts.
Customers began reporting issues with their cards being declined yesterday morning, and others have received error messages when trying to use NetBank online banking as well as the CommBank mobile app.
Commonwealth Bank has not publicly confirmed what has caused the technical issue or how long these issues are expected to last.
While some customers told the ABC that they began gaining access again in the afternoon, others are still having difficulties.
Customers also tried calling the telephone banking service, but received nothing but a pre-recorded message saying:
“We currently have a technical problem with telephone banking and NetBank, which will prevent you from transferring money and paying bills. We’re working to resolve this issue as a top priority and apologise for any inconvenience. You may wish to call back later as we are experiencing a high number of calls.”
A customer service representative told one caller that the technical issue arose after a CommBank app update was rolled out.
A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson told the ABC:
“We’re aware some customers are experiencing difficulties accessing some our services and we are urgently investigating.
“We apologise and thank customers for their patience.”
By 9am over 3,500 customers had reported problems with mobile and online banking, according to the website Downdetector.
Commonwealth Bank is the largest bank in Australia, with more than 15 million users, and 7.7 million CommBank app users.
