LAUNCESTON has become the first non-capital city to welcome QantasLink’s new Airbus A220 as the airline upgrades its fleet.
The airline said its inaugural flight landed at 10.40am today (October 14), the second A220 to join the QantasLink fleet this year.
The A220s are replacing QantasLink’s veteran Boeing 717s.
Qantas says this aircraft is already operating between Melbourne and Hobart and will begin operating between Sydney and Launceston from late October.
Tasmanian Premier and Tourism Minister Jeremy Rockliff says the new aircraft is a “game changer” for the state.
“As an island state, strong access links are so important to Tasmania, with over 80 per cent of our visitors coming via air,” he says.
QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan says the A220 will improve the travel experience to and from Launceston.
“We are thrilled to bring the new Airbus A220 aircraft to Launceston for the first time today,” says Yangoyan.
“The size of the aircraft makes it the perfect addition to our fleet that operate our routes to the Apple Isle and it’s great to see the A220 now flying to two Tasmanian airports.”
Launceston Airport CEO Shane O’Hare said the Airbus A220 is a fantastic aircraft.
“Passengers will notice the larger windows and quieter engines; our local businesses will benefit from the extra passengers the aircraft can carry,” he says.
“The A220 is incredibly versatile and presents some incredible possibilities for Launceston …”
The Liberal MP for Bass, Simon Wood says the new service is a big win for Tasmania.
“As part of the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are sustainably growing our tourism sector,” Wood said.
“Northern Tasmania is renowned for its stunning natural environment which is a significant drawcard for many holiday goers.
“Tasmania is one of only a handful of net-zero destinations in the world, so more sustainable air travel options will be increasingly welcomed by visitors and Tasmanians.”
The new aircraft will generate 25 per cent fewer emissions and 50 per cent less noise than the aircrafts they replace.
There are four A220 aircraft operating across the Qantas network with a fifth due to arrive in November.
