The Aussie tennis star has shocked the world by beating out World No.1 Daniil Medvedev in the round of 32 at the Montreal Masters in Canada.
In just under two hours, Kyrigos beat the Russian two sets to one, winning the second set 6-4 and the third 6-2.
His win sees him advance to the round of 16 where he will be up against fellow Australian Alex de Minaur. Kyrgios spoke to Tennis Australia saying that it didn’t matter that Medvedev was World No.1, he just wanted to do his best.
“I’ve had some success against him in the past and he’s beaten me before so I feel like we know each other’s games well,” he said.
“I’m not the type of player who goes into these matches looking at rankings or anything like that.
“It’s just who I’m playing and what kind of ball they’re giving me and today I had a very clean objective of how I was going to play– a lot of serve and volley, a lot of aggressive play from the back – and I executed better than he did on the day.”
After the match, Kyrgios penned a message to his ill mother on the event camera saying, “Be strong Ma”.
“It’s hard because even travelling now, my mum is in hospital at the moment, my dad hasn’t been very well, my brother just had a baby and I don’t get to be there with my family when normal people would like to be with them,”
De Minaur was successful in his round against World No.15 Grigor Dimitrov, beating the Hungarian in two sets.
“19 hours later got the job done! Happy to be in the next round here,” he said on Instagram.
The Aussie is also playing in the Men’s Doubles and is set to take the court for round of 32 with Brit Cameron Norrie. They’ll be up against Argentinian pair Francisco Cerundolo and Diego Schwartzman.
In the Women’s Singles unfortunately Ajla Tomlijanovic couldn’t make it past the round of 32 after failing to win against World No.1 Iga Swiatek.
