The famed Australian singer John Farnham will undergo surgery today after his family revealed that he’s been diagnosed with cancer.
In a statement obtained by AAP, the 73-year old’s family said that the diagnosis had been recently made.
“We have recently discovered that John has a cancerous growth. He has been admitted to hospital this morning for surgery and ongoing treatment.”
It’s not known what type of cancer Farnham has been diagnosed with but his family have asked for privacy while he undergoes treatment.
Through his family, the singer made a statement about the revelation.
“Cancer diagnosis is something that so many people face every single day, and countless others have walked this path before me,” he said.
“The one thing I know for sure is that we have the very best specialist healthcare professionals in Victoria and we can all be grateful for that. I know I am.”
He was previously in hospital over three years ago where he had a severe kidney infection.
The news comes only two weeks after his long time and close friend Olivia Newton-John passed away at age 73 from a 30-year battle with breast cancer.
He paid tribute to her saying that “Behind that iconic smile was a tenacious fighter. A beautiful voice and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed”.
The last time the pair performed together was at the Fire Fight Australia Concert 2020 in Sydney where they sang Two Strong Hearts.
Farnham is considered to be one of Australia’s most famed performers, having started his career in the mid-60s.
In 1987 he was made Australian of the Year and in 1996 was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia. His hit album Whispering Jack was No.1 on the Aria charts for 25 weeks and became the second-highest selling album in Australian history.
