A Chinese grandpa known as ‘Uncle Chen’ has completed a marathon all the while smoking cigarettes throughout the entire race.
The 50-year-old was pictured smoking cigarette after cigarette during his 3.5-hour Xin’anjiang marathon in Jiande, China which was just over 40km long. Chen finished the race at a time of 3:28:45 and placed 574th out of 1500 runners.
Photos of the smoking marathon-runner were uploaded to Chinese social media site Weibo where many people pointed out that he’s done a similar thing before.
He has previously been spotted lighting up while running in the 2018 Guangzhou Marathon and 2019 Xiamen Marathon reported Fox Sports, who said he finished in Guangzhou at a time of 3:36 and Xiamen at 3:32.
Event organisers confirmed that the ciggie smoking grandpa was legit by sharing his finishing certificate.
Some on Weibo were quick to condemn his actions saying, “This type of behaviour should be banned from the race” while another person said, “ I feel bad for the runners around him”.
However, others on the social media platform showered him with praise saying, “There goes my hero. Watch him as he smokes” said one person.
Another said, “So this is what peak performance looks like”.
There are no rules as to whether or not a marathon runner can smoke during the race.
It is not know how many cigarettes ‘Uncle Chen’ smoked whilst running.
