Basketball star LeBron James has broken the record previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading points scorer.
The game took place on Tuesday night in Los Angeles as the LA Lakers faced off against the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder.
With 10.2 seconds left in the third quarter, James landed the 20-foot shot that would allow him to surpass the record held by Abdul-Jabbar for the most regular-season points in league history.
The previous record of 38,387 points scored over 20 seasons stood for an impressive 38 years prior to James’s record-breaking accomplishment.
The star-studded audience included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who sat courtside in anticipation of the iconic moment.
“I just wanna say thank you to the Laker faithful, you guys are one of a kind,” said James, as the game paused to celebrate the achievement.
“To be able to be in the presence of just a legend and great as Kareem, it means so much to me, it is very humbling.
“Everybody that’s ever been a part of this, run with me the last 20-plus years, I just wanna say I thank you so much, because I wouldn’t be me without y’all.
“All your help, all your passion, all your sacrifices help me get to this point.
“To the NBA … thank you guys so much for allowing me to be a part of something I’ve always dreamed about, and I would never ever in a million years dreamt this even better than it is tonight so, f*** man, thank you guys,” he said, to explosive applause.
Despite James’s personal victory, it was the Oklahoma City Thunder that came out on top at the end of the night, finishing the game just three points ahead of the LA Lakers with a final score of 133-130.
