A worker has been injured after a crane collapsed at the construction site for the new Sydney Fish Market.
A crane jib fell onto scaffolding at the Blackwattle Bay site in Glebe at around midday on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to attend to one man in his thirties, who is believed to have suffered back injuries.
Construction company Multiplex confirmed that the worker was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
“A serious incident has occurred at the new Sydney Fish Market site where a crane jib has collapsed, injuring one worker,” a spokesperson said.
“The crane is within the compounds of the site. The site has been evacuated and there is no risk to the workforce or public.
“We are offering our full support to emergency services, SafeWork NSW and the workforce. We will work with the relevant authorities to carry out a full investigation.”
Police closed the roads surrounding the site and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Witnesses described the sound of the crane crashing as a “massive thump” like a “bomb”.
Another witness told a radio station that the crane “sliced right through to the second level with the scaffolding.”
The new Sydney Fish Market will replace the existing market nearby and is expected to attract millions of people each year.
Construction is due to be completed in late 2024.
SafeWork NSW said they are aware of the incident, but did not comment further.
It is understood that they will be investigating the matter further.
