RESIDENTS near Bankstown Airport in Sydney may soon notice more light aircraft flying overhead and at lower heights.
The change is contained in a joint Civil Aviation Safety Authority-Airservices Australia proposal for a light aircraft corridor for the airport amid growing traffic over Sydney.
Airservices Australia is seeking community feedback on the proposal which would establish an uncontrolled airspace corridor to the southeast of controlled airspace.
Airservices says in uncontrolled airspace,light aircraft can fly up to a maximum of 8500 feet without air traffic control clearance. Most light aircraft and helicopters currently operate outside or underneath controlled airspace, it says.
“Airservices Australia is committed to engaging with the community on the proposed changes to Bankstown airspace operations,” says Airservices Head of Community Engagement, Donna Marshall.
“Our primary goal is to ensure all community members within the proposed corridor area are aware of the proposed changes and have the opportunity to provide feedback on any areas of interest.”
Community sessions are continuing to be held.
The dates, times and venues for remaining sessions are
● Wednesday, September 18, from 4pm-7pm at Panania Scout Hall, 21 Wilson St, Panania;
● Thursday, September 19, 4pm-7pm, Wattle Grove Youth Centre, 2071 Australis Ave, Wattle Grove;
● Saturday, September 21, 12pm-3pm, Stapleton Avenue Community Centre, 3A Stapleton Ave, Sutherland.
Rescheduled:
● Engadine Community Centre on Thursday, September 26, from 4pm-7pm;
● Moorebank Community Centre on Saturday, September 28, from 12pm-3pm.
Airservices says the intent of the proposal is to reduce aircraft congestion and provide more equal access to airspace as Sydney air traffic grows with a new international airport in Western Sydney taking shape.
The airspace earmarked for the new corridor is currently overflown by aircraft from Kingsford Smith Airport.
