Redland City Council is asking its ratepayers to help shape a safety action plan for the community on the Coast south of Brisbane City.
Redlands Mayor Jos Mitchell says residents can take part in workshops and fill out an online survey this month.
“We recognise that everyone’s experience is different and are calling on people from a range of age groups and different parts of the city to have their say during the consultation process,” she says.
“The questions in the survey are designed to be answered in 5-10 minutes and ask people to reflect on their perceptions of community safety, such as their top three safety concerns and what they see as the priorities for Council improvements.”
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
Mainland — Saturday, May 17, 10am-1pm: Redlands Sporting Club, Wellington Point.
Monday, May 19, 5pm-8pm: Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club.
Islands — Saturday, May 24, 9am-12pm: Dunwich Community Hall.
Mitchell says council will also talk to other stakeholders such as police, community leaders and local groups.
“The data and insights we receive from these engagement activities will help identify the areas of greatest need and ensure the action plan targets these priorities,” she says.
The mayor says the plan is a key initiative of the 2024 Redlands Coast Stronger Communities Strategy.
“This strategy sets a framework and strategic vision for strengthening the fabric of our city through council initiatives and actions,” Mitchell says.
“The priorities identified in the action plan will also align with the goal of keeping our city strong, connected, safe and resilient.”
She points out that, in addition to the police, council plays its part in community safety by cleaning graffiti, homelessness responses, putting on local safety measures and providing public security cameras.
“The action plan will focus on these core local government roles and responsibilities in the context of broader crime-related concerns and community-level interventions.”
Mitchell says the action plan project will also look at safety provisions in neighbouring local government areas.
“This is another important opportunity to look at what is working and identify areas where improvements may need to be made,” she says.
“Along with the engagement activities, this process will ensure the action plan is evidence-based and best responds to the areas of greatest concern.”
