In a northern Victorian ‘silo’ town perhaps best known for tractor pulling, Quambatook’s weir pool is getting a facelift.

The pool is turning into an aquatic precinct to lure more visitors and provide more recreation options for residents.

The Victorian government has given more than $2 million for the work which is expected to create 15 jobs during construction and help diversify the local economy from agriculture.

Quambatook (or ‘Quamby’), in Gannawarra Shire, is located 302km northwest of Melbourne and 60km south of Swan Hill.

Shire council chief executive officer Geoff Rollinson says the start of construction work is a “significant milestone” for this project.

“We look forward to seeing this provide residents and visitors a unique way to explore the Avoca River,” he says.

State Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes says such projects “are about helping small regional communities diversify their economies, draw in more visitors and residents, and build happy places for thriving communities.”

“With works now under way to bring this project to life, I’m looking forward to seeing people from far and wide visit Quambatook to experience the best of the beautiful Avoca River.”

The government says work on the weir will boost water levels in the pool, protect habitats and provide for more water-based recreation.

Launching areas will be built for boats, kayaks and canoes, with new fishing jetties and platforms.

The shoreline will be upgraded with picnic facilities while trees will be planted to provide shade during the hotter months.

New tracks and trails will link the weir to Quambatook’s town centre while a new bridge near River Street will allow access to the eastern banks of the Avoca River.
