The design of Hobart’s AFL stadium has gone on show on site as the fate of the project remains up in the air.

A design showcase opened at the Macquarie Point site today (Friday) and runs until Wednesday (November 5).

The free public event will showcase detailed plans, a 3D architectural and engineering model, and material samples for the stadium’s interior and exterior.

The Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal, Eric Abetz says Tasmanians can learn more about the work that has gone into stadium planning.

“The stadium is more than just sketches on a page; it is a carefully designed venue that offers function spaces, restaurants, and bars,” he says.

“It will unlock opportunities to host more and larger scale functions, events, sports games and tournaments, and entertainment.”

Abetz says the showcase will allow the public to have their say on design elements like seat colours and ideas on Tasmanian murals.

“We look forward to bringing this showcase to places around the state in the new year,” he says.

Macquarie Point Development Corporation CEO Anne Beach says the design work is as far as they can take it before details have to be finalised ahead of drafting construction plans.

She says they have “worked closely” with Stadiums Tasmania (the future operator), users and technicians to deliver a multipurpose stadium on the Hobart foreshore.

“We’ve been busy working through over 1500 pages of plans and schedules to pull out snapshots to share, as well as preparing information boards to help explain the thinking behind some of the venue’s key features.”

HOBART AFL HOPES

A final decision on the 23,000 seat $1.13 billion stadium will be made in the state parliament’s upper house in December.

In September, Tasmania’s Planning Commission recommended that the $1.13 billion project not go ahead which the state government rejected.

The state’s new AFL team, the Tasmania Devils, is dependent on the stadium being built, the league says.

The showcase is at The Goods Shed at 41 Evans Street, Hobart, and runs every day until Wednesday from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free.
