Moreton Bay council has gone into bat for Redcliffe baseball with a new long-term peppercorn lease for the Peninsula Padres.

The 10-year $1 per annum lease is for an area of Talobilla Park, Kippa-Ring, where a new softball clubhouse is being built.

A large demountable building will shift from council’s Petrie depot to the park as the club secures funding to build a storage shed, council says.

Padres President Lee Gaskell says the temporary facilities and new lease will help them grow.

“With more than 400 players, ranging in age from 4 to 67 years, we want to ensure we have the best facilities possible for them to train and compete,” he says.

“The new temporary facilities will provide much-needed space for umpire changing facilities and deliver a bigger canteen, which will help us generate more funds to reinvest in our club.”

He says the new lease and building “is vital in ensuring we can continue to operate at a low cost”.

PADRES STAYING AT PARK

Mayor Peter Flannery says they are proud to help ensure the Padres can remain at Talobilla Park.

“For many years, the club promoted and delivered baseball in Redcliffe and has established itself as the largest baseball club in Australia,” he says.

“The club’s growing popularity is what led council to provide a temporary storage and meeting space at Talobilla Park while a new clubhouse is built.”

The new facilities, which is due to be completed within the next month, are part of a new tenure agreement.

Councillor Sandra Ruck says the Peninsula Padres club has occupied parts of Talobilla Park since 2003.

“The Peninsula Padres … have been a key part of our sporting community for decades.

“It’s great to have them stay for next to no lease costs for at least the next 10 years,” she says.
