Commuter car parking in northwestern Sydney will get $160 million spent on 1200 new spots at the Tallawong and Hills Showground stations.
A new multi-storey carpark with up to 1100 spots will be built at Tallawong with more than 50,000 new homes planned for the suburb over the next 20 years.
The Hills Showground station carpark will get another storey added to it, adding 100 more spaces which will be integrated into Transport for NSW’s Park & Ride system.
(Tallawong station currently has 820 regular car park spots while the Hills Showground Station has 492 spots according to Transport for NSW).
“At Tallawong and Hills Showground, parking is at a premium every day with spots regularly taken by 8am,” NSW Premier Chris Minns says.
“We understand this is a challenge for commuters who may have no option to drive to the station, and the 1200 additional parks should make it easier.
“Not enough carparks were built to cater for the demand which is now on Metro northwest, and we expect that to further increase as more people move into the area,” he says.
COMMUTER RELIEF ‘IS COMING’
Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car says: “Commuters in the northwest deserve better than starting off their mornings circling around for a parking spot.”
Transport Minister John Graham says that the M1 metro “has been wildly popular” and the new carparks should “change the lives of commuters” in the northwest who’ve had very few public transport options until the Metro.
“This significant and long sought infrastructure investment will be part of a wider look at the needs of Metro users and improvements we will deliver,” he says.”
MP for Riverstone Warren Kirby says he has “seen these scenes first-hand and know our community has been doing it tough each and every morning”.
“When I speak to people, the most common feedback is about the lack of parking at these stations,” he says.
The government says their plan to expand commuter parking will support efforts to introduce better buses, active transport and greater Metro capacity.
