The first of 12 new driverless trains for the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport Line have arrived at its new Orchard Hills base.

The three-carriage train was unloaded at Port Kembla on Monday after a 23,000-kilometre sea journey from Vienna, Australia, and driven to a new stabling and maintenance facility for assembly.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport Catherine King says it is “great to see” the Metro trains arrive in time for the airport to open to commercial flights.

“With room for bags and flight information, these will be among the most advanced trains in the country,” she says.

FIRST FOR WEST SYDNEY

NSW Transport Minister John Graham says Western Sydney is getting a world-first in airport travel.

“Western Sydney is getting the most technologically-advanced driverless trains in the world to service the new international airport and that growing part of the city,” he says.

“We are excited to see the first train unloading at the docks. These trains will be unique to the Western Sydney Airport Metro line.

“Platforms and gates at the new airport station will be wider to make it a first-class experience when services begin.”

Federal MP for Werriwa Anne Stanley says the trains will connect south-west Sydney bus routes to the airport from July.

“These new transport links will be really welcome additions for visitors and the thousands of people expected to work in the airport precinct.”

NSW MP for Leppington Nathan Hagarty says the trains are “purpose-built for airport travellers” and make access easier.

The other 11 trains are to arrive later this year when dynamic testing on the 23km, six-stop line is due to start.

The journey time from St Marys Metro station to the airport terminal station will be around 15 minutes.
