Costco is ‘flying into’ Brisbane Airport with work under way on a new $145 million 6.7-hectare warehouse.
Its new 15,600 square metre warehouse and fuel station is due to open in late 2029 and will be its first store in Brisbane City.
It already has stores in Queensland on the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Moreton Bay (North Lakes).
The airport is developing a 51ha site directly opposite the international terminal, more than three times the size of South Bank Parklands.
The new warehouse will occupy 12% of that site with perimeter drainage works now under way.
The airport sees the warehouse as a key chapter in its plans to develop a mixed-use precinct, says chief executive officer Gert-Jan de Graaff.
“Costco’s commitment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Brisbane Airport,” he says.
“It is the first of many announcements to come as we bring to life a new mixed-use precinct for the city.
“Costco is just the beginning. Even a retailer of this scale will occupy only 12% of this development site, leaving significant opportunities for other businesses to establish themselves.”
COSTCO CONFIDENT IN SITE
The company’s Country Manager for Australia/New Zealand Chris Tingman says the new warehouse is a strong vote of confidence in the area’s growth.
“This is a dynamic and fast-growing region,” he says.
“The warehouse will have 870 car parking spaces and will feature a fuel station with 34 bowsers for quick refuelling.
“It will employ approximately 250 full-time staff once complete.”
The company has more than 900 stores worldwide with 15 of them in Australia, Tingman says.
Located 12 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD, the site will directly connect to South East Queensland’s road network including the M1 Gateway motorway.
The new mixed-use precinct is part of the airport’s $5 billion Future BNE transformation project to strengthen its role in the state economy.
