The Socceroos managed to earn a crucial point in their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against hosts Japan on Tuesday (October 15).
According to Football Federation Australia, head coach Tony Popovic made six changes for the game to the side that defeated China 3-1 previously; Jason Geria, Cam Burgess, Jordy Bos, Riley McGree, Ajdin Hrustic and Luke Brattan (debut) all started the game.
Japanese coach Hajime Moriyasu made two changes to the Samurai Blue team that beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 last week.
After a cautious start, Japan managed the first shot of the game then proceeded to dominate the first half with 70 per cent of possession but failed to convert into goals.
The hosts constantly looked to attack out wide, FFA said, but the Socceroos defence stood firm even as they struggled to put together any sustained attack.
Japan struggled to find their usual flowing game and managed six first-half shots but only one hit the target. The half ended on a scoreless draw.
In the second half, the Socceroos had more ball in the early stages as Japan, and their fans, grew frustrated.
In the 57th minute, Australia went up field and Lewis Miller, with the ball and in space, sent in a powerful cross which Japan defender Shogo Taniguchi deflected off his leg into his own net.
In the 76th minute, Japan equalised in similar manner when a cross from Keito Nakamura was deflected into his goal by Cam Burgess.
Japan looked menacing in the closing stages but failed to capitalise further.
Australia now sits second in Group C in the AFC Asian Qualifiers group with four points from two games.
The Socceroos’ next game will be on Thursday, November 14, when they host Saudi Arabia in Melbourne.
