TWENTY-ONE new off-leash dog parks are on the cards for Moreton Bay ratepayers in south-east Queensland.
Moreton Bay City Council says that despite the 68 current designated off-leash areas, more areas are needed.
Mayor Peter Flannery says there is “strong” demand for more off-leash areas.
“Moreton Bay residents love getting out and about with their dogs and we’re planning for the future,” he says.
“We know there’s strong community demand for places where people can exercise and socialise with their dogs; we’re acting on that feedback.”
He says the new sites were identified during a city-wide review.
“We’re considering the needs across the city to ensure everyone has access to dog-friendly facilities in their local area and that environmental sustainability is front and centre in our planning.”
He says a decision to advance to design and construction will be made only after a thorough site assessment against council’s guidelines and liaison with local community.

PET REGISTRATION REMINDER
Meanwhile, council is reminding pet owners to register their pets and keep their registration details up to date.
“It’s important to let council know if you’ve moved house, changed phone numbers, or if your pet has been desexed, rehomed or (died),” Flannery says.
“You can also opt to receive your animal renewal notice by email and eligible residents can apply online for pensioner concessions on pet registration.”
Pet owners can register and update their details anytime at moretonbay.qld.gov.au/animals
KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE
- Register your pet: All cats and dogs must be registered within 14 days of moving to Moreton Bay or by 12 weeks of age. Concessions are available for pensioners and for desexed pets.
- Microchipping: In Queensland, cats and dogs aged between 8 and 12 weeks must be microchipped. Free microchipping is available for registered dogs through council’s Pets in Public Spaces program, and subsidised microchipping is available for cats and dogs at the city’s animal pound.
- Identification: Pets must wear a tag with current contact details whenever they leave their registered property.
- Secure your yard:Make sure your yard or enclosure is secure to prevent pets from escaping and regularly check fences and gates for gaps or damage.
- Desex your pet: Desexing not only helps reduce unwanted litters, but it can also improve your pet’s health and behaviour. Council also offers discounted registration for desexed pets.
