The NSW surf life-saving patrol season starts tomorrow amid growing interest, and membership, in their work over the last 12 months.
The season runs from September 27 to April 26, 2026, and is marked by a symbolic raising of the surf flags at Dixon Park Beach, Newcastle.
The government reports that Surf Life Saving NSW’s membership rose by 5% to a record 83,000 in 12 months; patrolling membership rose by 2.6% to more than 21,000 while Nipper numbers rose 4.5% to almost 30,000.
There were 52 drownings on the coast in 2024-25, down from 61 the year before, but a warm and dry summer is predicted, says the report.
NSW Premier Chris Minns says that there has been “too many tragedies in unpatrolled or isolated locations”.
“With a hot summer ahead, I urge everyone to swim between the flags, listen to the advice of lifesavers and put safety first. These small steps make all the difference,” he says.
Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley says that “when the red-and-yellow flags go up in Newcastle, it’s a signal that summer’s here”.
“With new rescue equipment, drones and Emergency Response Beacons (ERBs), lifesavers have the tools they need to keep locals and visitors safe,” she says.
Acting Minister for Emergency Services, Anoulack Chanthivong, says “there has never been a more important time to remind people to be aware and take water safety seriously” with a hot summer likely to drive beach visits.
The MP for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, says “every life lost in the ocean is one too many”.
Surf Life Saving NSW President Peter Agnew AM says they have 83,000 volunteers as well as lifesavers ready to return to the beach.
“There’s a role for everyone. We’re always looking for new members, whether you can contribute to admin, first aid, teaching our Nippers or even cook the club barbecue,” he says.
“You’ll learn new skills like piloting a drone and driving an inflatable rescue boat, you’ll gain valuable fitness and make friends for life.”
SURF LIFESAVING BOOST
The NSW Government says it has played its part via:

- The installation of 64 new beacons fitted with flotation devices and enhanced technology like high-definition video live-streaming.
- Upcoming UAV (drone) technology and AI camera trials.
- $5.4m for clubs to upgrade, restore or build facilities.
- The launch of an online Beach Safety Hub with tips and guides (in 24 languages) to safety around the state’s waterways. Visit the hub at www.beachsafetyhub.org.au
