Three people have been killed in a mass shooting at a business in Smithsburg, Maryland.
A state trooper was also reportedly shot in the shoulder during the confrontation, and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said he would continue to provide updates on the situation as new information came to light.
“The State Police responded, pursued the suspect, suspect fired and shot the state trooper in the shoulder, who then returned fire and shot him back,” Hogan said at a press conference this morning.
The deadly incident is now the 254th mass shooting in America this year, as calls for gun reform intensify in the Senate.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing the police response; deputies found four victims at the Columbia Machine Inc., three of whom were dead and another who was critically injured.
We are actively monitoring the mass shooting in #Smithsburg right now, and our office is in contact with officials on the ground. If you're local, please stay away from the area as law enforcement responds.

The suspect had left the scene but was later tracked down and engaged by a Maryland State Police trooper.
“Gunshots were exchanged between the suspect and the trooper,” the statement read.
“Both were injured and transported for medical treatment.”
Police say there is no current threat to the community.
Multiple law enforcement agencies have arrived on the scene to assist local deputies with their investigations.
The Investigative Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012 in the US defines mass killings as three or more deaths in a single incident, however the Act does not define mass shootings.
We will update this story as the situation unfolds.
