The Aussies are now through to their fifth-consecutive World Cup after winning the crucial match in a heart stopping penalty shootout.
While there were many close calls throughout the match, both Peru and Australia remained scoreless in the initial 90 minutes. Extra-time delivered the same result, 0-0 after more than two hours of total play.
It went to a penalty shootout, with Australia’s Martin Boyle missing their first penalty. Peru successfully hit the back of the net on their first and second penalty shot but hit the bar on the third, leaving both teams with one miss.
The Socceroos had no other issues in claiming the rest of their penalties. In a nail-biting moment, Peru stepped up to take one of their last penalty goals, but substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne read the play and magnificently stopped their goal, bringing Australia to victory with a score of 5-4 in the penalty shootout.

Australia now head into the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 alongside France, Denmark, and Tunisia for a place in Group D. The competition will kick off in November later this year with the Socceroos set to face France on November 23.
No doubt the team will spend the next few days celebrating before they get underway with training for the next several months, especially Andrew Redmayne who has been called a “national hero”. However, Redmayne has said that he trained hard for the moment but that in the end it’s effort from the entire team that contributed to the victory.
“This idea was floated pre-selection, that this might happen in these kind of circumstances, and for the two or three weeks we have been here, I have had that in my mind.
“I’ve been working on a few things in training, but at the end of the day, it is either right or left, the homework has been done and I’m just grateful to the other boys for running at 120 minutes.
“I’m no hero. I just played my role like everyone else did tonight. Not even the 11 on the pitch, it was much more than that, it is a team effort.”
Socceroos Coach Graham Arnold was elated with the result of the match, telling 10 Football the importance of this moment.
“I called Anthony Albanese the other day to give everyone the day off to celebrate this… I believe this is one of the greatest achievements ever.”
