Donald Trump has filed a defamation case against US news network CNN claiming that they’ve tried to politically taint him for years amid revelations he will run for president in 2024.
The former president is seeking US$475 million (A$729million) in punitive damages after alleging that CNN has had a long history of trying to tarnish his political career and has repeatedly branded him in negative connotations.
“As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has tried to taint the Plaintiff with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler,’” the lawsuit said.
It’s also been alleged by Trump that CNN has used their media power to dissuade people from voting for him.
“Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about the plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its massive influence, purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source, to defame the plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically.”
The case was filed in the US District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
CNN has yet to comment on the matter.
Trump was recently in Fort Lauderdale to attend the American Freedom Tour and although he has yet to launch or officially declare his presidency run for 2024, while at the event, told supporters that he would be seeking to run and be elected in 2024.
“With the support of everyone in this room, we will take back the House, we will take back the Senate and we will take back our country,” he said.
“You had a president that always put America first. I will be back and we will be better and stronger than ever before.”
While Trump has launched legal action against CNN, the businessman and his family were recently hit with a US$250 million lawsuit by the NY Attorney General.
After three years investigation, it’s been alleged by NY Attorney General Letitia James that he committed years of financial fraud and overestimated his businesses, assets, and properties.
“From 2011-2021, Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization knowingly and intentionally created more than 200 false and misleading valuations of assets on his annual Statements of Financial Condition to defraud financial institutions,” said Ms James.
