A famous singing nun has forsaken her vow to nunhood by leaving her convent in search for a new start as a waitress in Spain.
Cristina Scuccia, formerly Sister Cristina, rose to fame on The Voice of Italy in 2014 after she shocked judges and audiences with her incredible voice and the fact she was a nun.
She went on to be crowned that year’s winner and became a nationwide hit, even releasing an album with such songs as Madonna’s Like a Virgin, which she gifted to Pope Francis.
However while she garnered attention as the Italian singing nun, it turns out being a nun was not her calling in life.
On Sunday, she appeared on a talk show donning a new and modern look, explaining her decision for leaving the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family convent in Milan.
“I chose to follow my heart without thinking about what people would say about me,” she said.
“I took a leap of faith and was worried about ending up under a bridge, I always repeated this to my psychologist.”

She said that part of her decision to leave was due to the death of her father and the limited amount of time she was able to spend with her family because of commitments to the convent.
“Change is a sign of evolution but it’s always scary because it’s easier to anchor yourself to your own certainties rather than questioning yourself,” she said.
At the moment Scuccia is working in Spain as a waitress but plans to continue her pursuit of a career in music.
When asked whether she was still interested in her faith, she said even though she’s not a nun her beliefs remain extremely important to her.
“Sister Cristina is within me,” she said.
“I have had a wonderful journey but also a complex and difficult one. I believe even more in life and in God, faith has not gone away. It was almost 15 years of religious life, they were the best years of my life.”
