Former U.S. President Donald Trump has entered the world of NFTs, announcing the launch of “digital trading cards” featuring himself.
The limited-edition digital trading cards automatically enter buyers into a sweepstake, putting them in the running to win prizes such as a Zoom call with Mr Trump, signed memorabilia, and more.
The announcement comes from Mr Trump’s social media site Truth Social, where he posted a video to promote the NFTs, after creating a build up by calling it a major announcement.
“America needs a superhero,” Mr Trump said, describing the cover artwork for the collection, which depicts Mr Trump in a pose reminiscent of Superman.
“These limited edition cards feature amazing art of my life & career.
“Very much like a baseball card, but hopefully much more exciting.” He said in a post on Truth Social.
The announcement has garnered much criticism online from both those on the left and those on the right.
Current U.S. President Joe Biden tweeting in parody of Mr Trump’s major announcement.
“I had some MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENTS in the last couple of weeks, too…” President Biden said, going on to list several events that have occurred recently in his presidency.
Daily Wire host and controversial figure Ben Shapiro also tweeted a response.
“Thank God, the digital trading cards are here. It was indeed a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT.” Mr Shapiro said.
Conservative commentators and comedians the Hodgetwins, Keith and Kevin Hodge, tweeted their disappointment in the announcement.
“When all Patriots are looking for is hope for the future of our country and Trump hypes everybody up with a “BIG ANNOUNCEMENT”” they said.
“Then drops a low quality NFT collection video as the “announcement”, it just pushes people away.”
While many criticised the move, some praised it, with author Nick Adams posting a tweet in support of the collection after the announcement was made.
“President Trump’s major announcement is a total game changer just in time for Christmas!” Mr Adams said.
The profits from the NFT collection will not be going towards Mr Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
Mr Trump also announced a policy proposal for his 2024 presidential campaign which focuses on free speech.
The policy proposal was overshadowed by the amount of publicity and criticism surrounding the NFT collection.
The NFTs can be bought from collecttrumpcards.com for $99 USD.
Update: the collection has now been sold out.
