SAMOAN police officers have been training with the Australian Federal Police in Canberra as the island nation gears up to host the 24th CHOGM meeting late next month.
According to the AFP, a Samoa Police Tactical Operations Section (TOS) team worked closely with their Tactical Response Team (TRT) on first response training.
The 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will be held in Apia from October 21-26. CHOGM is the Commonwealth’s primary political meeting and is held every two years.
Ten TOS officers took part in training drills and scenarios. They were briefed on the role of the TRT in major events, in Australia and internationally, and training methods.
AFP Detective Superintendent Daniel Evans says the training will support interoperability and boost Samoan Police capability.
“The valuable skills and insights members of Samoa’s Police’s Tactical Operations Section gained while in Australia will ensure they are equipped and ready for any scenario ahead of CHOGM,” Detective Superintendent Evans said.
“The AFP is committed to providing ongoing support to the Samoa Police and Samoa Government ahead of CHOGM by providing advice, funding and access to AFP capability and training.
Samoa Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo says the training is a boost for officers ahead of CHOGM.
“This training also reflects the 15 years of partnership with the AFP that has grown and strengthened into what it is today,” Commissioner Filipo said.
“The advancement in tactical policing ahead of CHOGM improves our ability to deliver the event but also safety and security to the people and communities of Samoa on a daily basis.”
The AFP and Samoan Police have been working for two years as part of that nation’s preparations for CHOGM. Tactical communications training was held in April.
TOS officers and AFP members also visited the National Police Memorial in Canberra to lay a wreath for Samoa Police Sergeant Peniamina Perite, who was killed while arresting a murder suspect in the island nation recently.
