Fishos have taken the bait for season 10 of Australia’s richest fishing competition, the Million Dollar Fish.
According to the Northern Territory (NT) Government, 10 million-dollar tags have been activated; one for a newly tagged fish for season 10 while nine fish from season 9 will be reactivated.
The million-dollar tagged barramundi will remain active in the off-season.
NT Minister for Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby says the competition compliments the Territory’s reputation for fishing and barramundi.
“Bringing together thousands of people who share a passion for both significantly boosts the Top End’s economy and lifestyle,” Ms Boothby says.
“The Top End is the only place in the country where you can go fishing and stand a chance (of catching) a million-dollar fish.”
There are also 99 $10,000 red-tagged barra that will be released across the main fishing regions of Tiwi Islands, Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu and Arnhem Land.
“This is a competition anyone aged 18 and over can be a part of. All you have to do is register and wet a line, hit the water across the Top End and enjoy unparallelled fishing with the chance to reel in cash,” the minister says.
In Season 9, 19-year-old Keegan Payne from Katherine caught the 67cm million-dollar barramundi in the Katherine River, the first person to catch a million-dollar fish.
When a million-dollar barra is caught, the nine remaining fish will revert to $10,000 tagged fish for the season.
Cancer Council NT chief executive officer Tanya Izod says it is a deep honour to be named the competition’s charity of choice for the season ahead.
“Good luck to you all and remember, Territory anglers, to ‘Slip, Slop and Slap’ before you go in the sun,” she says.
The season will run to March 31, 2025, and already 11,231 registrations have been received in just over a month.
Registration is free but anglers must be over 18 and registered for the season, according to the rules and government.
