The final roof panel is in the new Sydney Fish Market’s 200m-long floating roof canopy as work now shifts to internal finishing.
The new market is at the heart of work to transform Blackwattle Bay with a waterfront promenade connecting Rozelle Bay with Woolloomooloo, the NSW Government says.
The site of the old, iconic markets will house 1100 homes and public space while the new markets will operate alongside restaurants and a seafood school.
NSW Premier Chris Minns says the new markets will be “truly spectacular” for the six million visitors expected to visit it annually.
NSW Lands and Property Minister Steve Kamper says the final installation is a significant milestone.
“The roof not only enhances the market’s aesthetic with its magnificent wave-like form now in place but also the environmental sustainability of the building,” he says.
“It is incredibly exciting to have reached this stage in the build and start work on finishes. We’re on the home stretch now and getting closer to being able to set foot in the new Sydney Fish Market, which will be an icon for Sydney and a destination for all.”
NSW Regional Director for Multiplex (the developers), Daniel Murphy says the final installation “is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our construction team and partners”.
“We can’t wait to see visitors enjoying this impressive building when it opens to the public.”
BUILDING DETAILS
The NSW Government says the roof comprises of 594 timber beams, up to 32m in length, and was completed in December 2024.
Combined with over 400 roof panels, the roof weighs in 2500 tonnes.
The roof requires some finishing touches including waterproofing, in the weeks ahead.
The project involved more than $670 million in contracts to local suppliers for services such as maritime piling, steel reinforcement and installation of roof cassettes.
The project created more than 700 jobs during construction with another 700 jobs to be created once it is open for business.
