The Tasmania Government has signed a new $6 million deal to keep Supercars racing on in the island state for three years.
Sports Minister Nick Duigan says the deal has two components.
“This deal provides $4,155,000 to ensure Supercars events – such as the upcoming Tasmania Super 440 – can thrive in Tasmania through until 2027,” he says.
“In addition, we will be providing $1.8m to Motorsports Tasmania, owners of Symmons Plains Raceway, to undertake mandatory safety and amenity improvements.”
The Tasmania Super 440 will run from May 9-11 at the raceway with an extra 200km of racing this year.
“The 2025 event will see the return of the Top Ten Shootout Qualifying for the first time since 2010 along with the inaugural Super2 Top Five Shootout,” Duigan says.
“Government is expecting more than 20,000 interstate and international visitors to attend over the next three years.”
Supercars CEO Shane Howard said the extension is a testament to Tasmania’s passionate motorsports fans.
“Tasmania has some of the most passionate and knowledgeable motorsport fans in the country …,” he says.
“The support from the Tasmanian Government has been crucial in ensuring we can continue delivering high-quality racing and entertainment for local fans and visitors to the region.”
“The Supercars Championship is one of Tasmania’s premier sporting events, attracting thousands of fans and generating millions of dollars in economic benefit for local businesses,” Duigan says.
“More than one million fans have attended Supercars events at Symmons Plains since 1995.”
The next round of Supercars will be held in Taupo, New Zealand, from April 11-13 with teams sending their cars and equipment via sea instead of flying across the Tasman Sea.
Tasmania will host the round after that.
