In AFL round two action, reigning premiers Brisbane held on for a 19-point win over West Coast at the Gabba on Saturday.
The visitors led at the final charge before they went down 11.9(75) to 14.10(94).
Lions coach Chris Fagan told AFL.com.au that the hot and humid conditions was “pretty tough” on players.
“I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game that’s started at 12 o’clock — ever. That’s 20-odd years so (it’s) unusual,” he said.
Fagan said they may hold lighter training sessions this week to allow players to recover.
“I haven’t seen that many of our blokes struggle like that. I’m not sure we’ll be doing too much training this week.”
At the MCG on Thursday to kick start the round, Carlton 8.12(60) went down to Hawthorn 12.8(80).
A day later (Friday) at the same ground, Footscray shared the same number of goals as Collingwood (10) but lost by six behinds in their 10.10(70) to 10.16(76) defeat.
On Saturday at the MCG, Essendon’s defence was not up to the job at hand in their 15.10(100) to 25.11(161) loss to Adelaide.
In Adelaide on Saturday, Port Adelaide 21.14(140) romped to an early start account for Richmond 9.14(68).
Tigers coach Adem Yze watched as the Crows shot out to a 6.6(42) to 1.3(9) lead at the first break and 13.11(89) to 3.6(24) at the main break.
At Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, St Kilda 15.8(98) held out Geelong 13.13(91).
The Saints had a strong first half and were able to hold on as the Cats came back, especially in the final quarter.
On Sunday, North Melbourne 19.11(125) was able to pull away from Melbourne 9.12(66) in the final quarter to seal the result.
At Perth on Sunday, the Sydney Swans sneaked a 9.14(68) win over hosts Fremantle 9.11(65) at Optus Stadium.
The Swans had to overcome a slow first quarter when they could only manage five behinds to the Dockers’ 4.3(27).
In the end, the margin of victory was decided by three behinds as both sides kicked nine goals apiece.
The bye went to Gold Coast Suns, Western Sydney Giants.
